Central Massachusetts Senior photographer Lea Jones

While I started my photography career with mostly families and weddings, the last few years have brought me so many seniors. I was first intimidated by seniors because taking photos of a person alone takes a lot of skill, my photography is mostly based on creating real connection and genuine moments between clients. Since I strive to get real expressions and emotion in my photography, I work extra hard to get these moments with portraits of people alone, and particularly young men and women that come to me for their senior photography. Turns out, any human in whom you show interest and love opens up and shows you their heart, which then shines in their photos.

Before the session itself, I already communicate as much as possible about the location and what they would like to see happen during the session. When it’s session time, I will do everything I can to get them to relax and forget about the camera. Being in front of the camera at 17 is absolutely the worst. ( heck! it’s the worst for this middle aged woman who is still not always comfortable in her skin, who am I kidding?).

I have found that I genuinely enjoy taking photos of these young men and women, my older kids are now beyond that age and I have soft spot for kids finishing high school and excited for their next steps: going into the workforce, going into apprenticeship, going to college, going to travel the world. My kids have done all of it, and they have not necessarily followed the traditional path of college. I find it all exciting and I am interested in understand the “why” behind their choices. One of the girls I was lucky to photograph had such a passion for nursing and healthcare that stemmed from her struggles in life, and I got all teary taking photos of her.

I encourage seniors to bring 2/3 changes of clothes so that we can have a variety on photos, and they are welcome to bring props, but there is no obligation. Parents are welcome to stay around, but some seniors tend to relax more when parents give them some space and watch from a distance.

Here are a few blogpost of wonderful senior sessions I have done over the years:

- In the meadows, early morning in the fall

- A beach on Cape Cod

- A senior session in Sturbridge Massachusetts, with a Tantasqua tennis player

- A waterfall in the Berkshires

- A young man session in Sturbridge

- Early morning session for this young man in a field
